Brickit's AI Camera Scans Your LEGO to Suggest Things You Can Build
Whoa... -B
It's not surprising to me that this isn't an official LEGO app at the moment because it feels sort of antithetical to the imagination part of playing with LEGOs. That being said, there's an incredible AR app that they put out when iPhones got that new chip (or however that works) that lets you place virtual sets alongside the ones you have. That's genius marketing. They also have a way to make certain sets "live" by placing the set in the frame and then the characters start moving and waving at you. When I played with that app a couple years ago it melted my brain. -C
The Day the Good Internet Died
Pull to refresh, pull to refresh, pull to refresh, pull to refresh... desperately digging for just one more hit of that sweet dopamine... What has happened to us? And how do we make it stop? -B
Step 1: remove all endless scroll apps from your telephone. -C
Is there an app that can do that for me? -B
The UX on this Small Child Is Terrible - McSweeney’s Internet Tendency
Another well-researched and thought-provoking essay from McSweeney's. A preview:
It’s got unicorn print pants, a shirt that says THE FUTURE IS FEMALE, a llama sweater, three hairclips in three different colors, and a raincoat (also unicorns) in a region that’s experiencing crisis-level drought conditions. If you try to remove even one of these visual elements, the Small Child emits a high-pitched scream, and you’re right back to the troubleshooting issue that I’ve already described.
What really happened in Texas during the snow storm?
Beware the easy answer. When your tribe tells you its "the windmills" or "the politicians" or "the whatever" they're wrong. Don't succumb. Reality is messy and complicated and very few things are simple. -B
I understood 5% of what this person was explaining, but the graphs were helpful. Regardless, B is right on with the "very few things are simple" takeaway. But keep making fun of windmills if you feel so led. I wish I had a windmill. - C
6,000 years of arrows emerge from melting Norwegian ice patch
Someone hiking around this enormous ice patch a few years ago found a perfectly preserved, thousand-years old shoe. Since then arrows from previous generation's hunting activities are pouring out of the ice and there's some interesting insights into our ancient ancestors. -B
Automate the Boring Stuff with Python
I know someone who also uses this here newsletter writing software who used Python to automate tasks related to publishing his newsletter. I should probably take a little time to learn this language, but I should probably also learn a foreign language. - C
I have this. My dad has this. We walk out of a building together and we both sneeze. Twice. -B
How Google Interferes With Its Search Algorithms and Changes Your Results
Skynet is here and messing with your mind, man. Dons tinfoil hat
That's right, two Skynet references in one issue. Deal with it.
I love these little deep wormholes. There's a whole art / science / skill behind typing 200+ words a minute and its different than I expected. -B
