The Layman’s Guide to Pairing Beer With Breakfast
I've long been a fan of having a beer at brunch. I've never been a big mimosa guy, mainly because of the acidity, and I recently tried a Bloody Mary and could not for the life of me understand why people consume those. The easiest way to try this out is, as the article suggests, to grab a coffee-inspired brew. Their list at the bottom leaves out a couple of no-brainers, in my opinion. You should be able to get these locally in Memphis: Wiseacre's Gotta Get Up To Get Down (coffee milk stout), Schlafly's Oatmeal Stout, and Founder's Breakfast Stout (an imperial style coffee stout). Thanks to Brian F. for the link.
What It Actually Costs to Open a Restaurant in San Francisco
This is really informative to someone like me that regularly dreams about opening a restaurant one day. And also a little shocking and depressing when I think of all the work that would go into opening a restaurant and how I'm basically unqualified to do any of it. Anyone know how these costs compare to Memphis? I hope it would be waaay cheaper and less complicated (because we don't have all those silly CA rules).
The Grocery Store America Loves Most
Not to spoil it, but it's Kroger. Surprising. And the article has a bunch of links to the original report, which for data nerds like me is pretty fun to read (especially the beer part, which is where that link goes). Somehow Bud Light is edging out Coors Light in the battle for most favorable terrible beer.
Taco Bell is now one of America's healthiest fast-food chains
Everyone has (I hope) at least one restaurant that they're ashamed to say that they frequent; mine is no longer Taco Bell thanks to this tiny little article. Now if I could just stop buying McMuffins...
While we're discussing the merits of Taco Bell, how good are they at naming stuff? Next time you're out with friends – preferably at a fancy restaurant – take turns pitching the next menu item for Taco Bell. Provide a name and brief description, keeping in mind you've really only got a few ingredients to work with (a few meats, nacho cheese, lettuce, Fire sauce, Doritos, etc). Example: Luchadoro Grande, an oversized burrito that comes with a wrestling mask. You have to wear the mask while you eat it.
This site is beautiful (particularly this page). Breakfast EVERYWHERE. With fun little articles about the experience of ordering each one of these items while traveling. I also joined their newsletter. Thanks to Brian F. (again) for the recommendation.
Rules for an Honorable Nightcap
I read this article a few years ago and was recently reminded of it when I was discussing nightcaps with a few guys. Quickly summarized:
There's also a playlist at the bottom.
3 Ways to Pair White Bean Soup | Food & Wine
It's getting warmer so my time to cook soups is drawing to a close. But towards the end of winter and all through spring I've been cooking several soups and pastas featuring white beans (like cannellini) and I was having trouble figuring out what to pair them with. This article is obviously meant to solve that problem, and it reminded me that I've been meaning to try Beaujolais; I still haven't gotten around to actually doing that, but in case you'd like to here's a short list of three to try.
Closed-on-Sunday Chicken Sandwich | Chick-fil-A
I haven't tried this recipe yet but I'll get to it. This is also the only link I've ever clicked in a CFA marketing email. I also don't know how I got on the list to receive CFA marketing emails.
A Day in the Life of a Food Vendor
I'm 100% sure that doing anything in New York is more difficult than doing it in Memphis. That said, being a food vendor sounds like a ton of work regardless of where you live, and I thought this was an interesting glimpse into the day-to-day of running a business.
Everyday Pancakes Recipe - NYT Cooking
I don't make pancakes every day, but when I do, I prefer dos pancakes. I mean these pancakes.
