Current Things
No Excuses: Immigration — theSkimm
This covers a lot of immigration rules and regulations, a lot of which I'd never heard of. Read this guide to get informed quickly and up your conversation game. Also read this guide if you want to be really sad about the Trump administration's first pass at "immigration reform", or, uh, kicking out people that don't look American (white). Have fun!
Timeless Things
A Stiff Upper Lip Is Killing British Men
This guy has a dark sense of humor, like if Chandler Bing lived in Gotham or something. Love it. But this is a good article about relationships and how men's struggle to open up to those close to them isn't just unhealthy, it's literally killing us. I also love how at the end up the article he says "I don't want to have to write a whole book about this stuff." and then he totes did. H/T to Michael Joyner for the link.
Random Things
Image-to-Image Demo
Every drawing I've tried to make in here has resulted in terrible, hilarious things. If you're reading this on a desktop computer, go waste a few minutes on this website. No guarantees if you click this link on your phone.
Business Time
Vanity metrics, the future, and 100,000 thank yous - Inside Intercom
I use Intercom every day for customer support and customer data, so I'm a big fan. They make my life so much easier. I read their updates because they have a really fun voice and tone: it's like they don't necessarily know how all of this is going to work out but they're excited about it.
Work / Productivity
Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy
I got this video from a workshop I signed up for last week. Be the shirtless dancing guy. Be the first follower. And someone please start a website dedicated to philosophical take-downs of really crappy video footage.
Sports (Disc Golf)
NBA Injury Report (@NBAInjuryR3port) | Twitter
Honestly, I don't really use Twitter anymore. But some people do. And some people have hilarious Twitter accounts. This is one of the few where I can honestly say every single tweet is pure gold. H/T to Andrew Millen for the link. Note: if you don't follow the NBA, none of this will make any sense to you.
I love technology (and science)
Earth’s Orbiting Junkyard Threatens the Space Economy
We really do fill any possible free space with junk, don't we? H/T to my sister Mary Mittwede for the link.
Further Reading
The Third Plate: Field Notes on the Future of Food by Dan Barber
I'm reading this book right now and I'm going to use it to ruin conversations with unsolicited advice about how to be a better consumer. The writing is fantastic and it doesn't get too preachy or too science-y. It's mostly narrative, just stories about what Dan Barber has learned after accidentally becoming one of the first restaurants labeled "farm to table". If you don't have time for 500 pages, you can get a pretty good idea of the book's content by watching the Dan Barber episode of Chef's Table on Netflix (first season).
